ChitChat · Chapter IV

The Sentence Still on the Hand

A pencil shaving, eraser crumbs, and the physical residue of improvement and deletion.

Point / shaving / crumbs

Editorial note. The final two messages of the later sitting. They follow a long improvisation about deliberately slight household objects; the rest remains unpublished. References to unpublished messages remain visibly marked rather than silently removed.

✏️ Outside the house: a pencil shaving.

A sharpener makes one intended object and one accidental one. The point leaves in your hand. The shaving exits as a fragile wooden spiral with a painted hem, keeping the exact curl of what the pencil surrendered.

It is often prettier than the improved pencil and has a life expectancy of seconds.

If it comes out unbroken, it resembles a tiny skirt made for a goblin ballerina who has already missed her cue. It also smells better than stationery has any right to.

No lesson. Dustbin imminent.

A tiny skirt for a goblin ballerina who has already missed her cue is worth the whole morning.

The same pencil makes a second byproduct at the other end: eraser crumbs.

The shaving is wood the pencil gave up in order to become usable. The crumbs are what's left of getting it wrong — and they aren't rubber. They're rubber plus graphite, which is why they're grey. The crumb is the only object on the desk that physically contains the deleted sentence.

You brush them away with the side of your hand and they leave a smear, so the removal re-deposits the thing. The eraser cannot take anything out of the world. It can only relocate it into a smaller, greyer, more portable form and then sit there looking innocent with a flat face.

Shaving smells like a forest. Crumbs smell like nothing at all.

No lesson. Desk swept. Sentence still on the hand.
